Kidnapped Doctor Freed After Paying Ransom

Dr Ibrahim Tahir, a medical doctor abducted alongside his younger brother in Auchi on 2 January 2026, has regained his freedom after his family paid a ransom of ₦50 million.

The kidnappers killed his younger brother, whose body was discovered near the Orley River at Igbira Camp on 5 January.

Speaking to reporters, the victims’ father said the family paid the ransom in two installments of ₦20 million and ₦30 million, leading to Dr Tahir’s release on Wednesday evening at about 8:00 p.m. He explained that relatives, non-governmental organisations, friends and other well-wishers jointly raised the money.

The father disclosed that a bullet grazed Dr Tahir’s leg during captivity and that vigilantes injured one of the abductors in an ambush shortly before the doctor’s release. He added that Dr Tahir is currently receiving medical treatment.

“I am relieved that my son is free, but I have also lost another son,” he said.

The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the development on Thursday, stating that the doctor had been released.
