Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has stated that fasting and prayers remain the only means of saving Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara from impeachment.

Fayose commented on Friday during an interview on Channels Television while responding to the escalating dispute between Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly.

On Thursday, the assembly began impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, citing allegations of gross misconduct.

The Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, accused the governor and his deputy of undermining democracy and faulted Fubara for allegedly failing to present the state budget in line with constitutional provisions.

Enemi George, chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, confirmed that the assembly had served notices of gross misconduct on both officials.

During the interview, Fayose urged Fubara to reconcile with Nyesom Wike, former Rivers governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

He criticised the governor for appointing commissioners and spending public funds without legislative approval.

Fayose said only intense prayers and fasting could avert the impeachment, adding that he hoped God would guide Fubara and that the president would help calm the situation.

He expressed surprise at the political fallout between Fubara and Wike, recalling that he had warned Wike during Fubara’s swearing-in ceremony against the possibility of betrayal, advice Wike reportedly dismissed.

Fayose, who served as Ekiti governor from 2003 to 2006 and again from 2014 to 2018, was impeached in 2006, although the Supreme Court overturned the decision in 2014. He later returned to office after winning the governorship election that same year.
